How it works

How the face shape finder measures you

Mogg's face engine runs right on your phone. It places 478 points across your face, measures four distances, and compares your proportions with the six face shapes.

  1. Step 1

    Line up

The camera guide checks distance, angle and light, then takes the photo itself.

  2. Step 2

    Measure

Forehead, cheekbones, jaw and length, from 478 points on your face.

  3. Step 3

    Match

The closest of six shapes, with a close call flagged, plus 3 cuts that suit it.

  • 478 points

    Every feature mapped, not guessed.

  • 4 measurements

    Forehead, cheekbones, jaw and length.

  • 3 haircuts

With the exact words to ask for.

The 6 shapes

The six face shapes, and what suits each

Each shape has a strength. A good haircut plays to it and balances the rest.

  • Oval

Slightly longer than it is wide, with a jaw slightly narrower than your cheekbones.

Best cuts: Textured crop, Side part, Medium flow.

  • Round

About as wide as it is long, with full cheeks and a soft jaw line.

Best cuts: Quiff with a fade, Faux hawk, Angular fringe.

  • Square

A wide, angular jaw about as wide as your forehead and cheekbones.

Best cuts: Buzz or crew cut, Textured slick back, Ivy League.

  • Heart

A wide forehead and cheekbones narrowing to a slim or pointed chin.

Best cuts: Textured fringe, Mid‑length side part, Low‑volume crop.

  • Long

Clearly longer than it is wide, with a long forehead or a long chin.

Best cuts: Fringe forward, Side‑swept medium, Classic taper.

  • Diamond

Cheekbones are the widest point, with a narrower forehead and jaw.

Best cuts: Fringe with texture, Swept‑back medium, Classic side part.

How to get a true face shape reading

Most wrong answers come from the photo, not the face. Five things make the reading true:

  • Hold the phone at arm’s length or further. Close-up selfies narrow the jaw.
  • Keep your head level and look straight into the lens.
  • Pull your hair back off your forehead and away from your jaw.
  • Face a window or soft light, so both sides of your face are lit.
  • Relax your face. A big smile widens the cheeks.

The same rules make any photo score better. The mog scanner guide shows the full setup, and the Mog Scale explains what each score means.

Beyond the shape

Face shape is the start, not the score

Your face shape tells you which cuts frame you best, not how your hair, skin, grooming, style and presence land right now. Solo Rate reads that: 10 parts, each scored out of 10, your strongest, your weakest, and the move worth the most points.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do I know my face shape?

Compare three widths and one length: forehead, cheekbones, jaw, and forehead to chin. The finder above measures all four from one front-on photo in seconds, then picks the closest of six shapes.

What are the 6 face shapes?

Oval, round, square, long (also called oblong or rectangle), heart and diamond. Most people sit close to one, and plenty sit between two. When yours is a close call, the finder says so and both sets of cuts will suit you.

Is the face shape detector accurate?

It measures 478 points on your face, so the proportions are real, but a phone photo has limits. Holding the camera too close makes the jaw look narrower and the nose longer, and a tilted head changes the widths. Use the camera guide: it waits until you are straight-on, at the right distance and in good light.

Is my photo uploaded or saved?

No. The face shape finder runs entirely in your browser on your own phone or computer. Your photo is never sent to Mogg.ai or anyone else, and it is gone when you close the tab.

What is the most attractive face shape?

There isn’t one. Oval is called the most versatile because almost every haircut works on it, but square jaws, high cheekbones and soft round faces all read as attractive with the right cut. The goal is balance, not a different face.

Can my face shape change?

Your bone structure doesn’t, but how your face reads does. Body fat, beard shape and especially your haircut change the outline people see. That is why the right cut is the fastest upgrade there is.
